Multiplicity
Psychoanalysis is not an exact science, and it has nothing to defend on that count: this is its position. It works at close quarters with what is human, in a space that neither the arts nor the sciences occupy alone, and it never unfolds outside the cultural and social coordinates that make it possible.
How, then, is one to account for the multiplicity of activities and practices that belong to what Freud called the work of culture, Kulturarbeit, the word by which he also named the work of analysis itself? Perhaps by making audible the resonances that bind psychoanalysis to fields from which it cannot be separated. In a lecture at the Tavistock, Bion observed that neither philosophy, nor mathematics, nor music can exist separately from the activity of thinking. Psychoanalysis is then no more than one way among others of approaching what lies at the foundation of the human mind.

La psychanalyse n'est pas une science exacte, et il n'y a là rien dont elle ait à se défendre : c'est sa position même. Elle travaille au plus près de l'humain, dans un espace que ni les arts ni les sciences n'occupent seuls, et elle ne se déploie jamais hors des coordonnées culturelles et sociales qui la rendent possible.
Comment rendre compte, dès lors, de la multiplicité des activités et des pratiques qui relèvent de ce que Freud nommait le travail de la culture, la Kulturarbeit, ce mot par lequel il désignait aussi le travail de la cure ? Peut-être en faisant entendre les résonances qui lient la psychanalyse à des champs dont elle n'est pas séparable. Lors d'une conférence à la Tavistock, Bion faisait remarquer que ni la philosophie, ni les mathématiques, ni la musique ne peuvent exister séparément de l'activité de penser. La psychanalyse n'est alors qu'une manière, parmi d'autres, d'approcher ce qui fonde l'esprit humain.
